Clifford Whiteley Elected Commissioner (Cameron) By more than a 2 to 1 margin, Clifford Whiteley coasted to a runoff election victory Tuesday over Linda Lynn Terry Meyer. Whiteley received 560 votes to Meyer's 254. Although voter turnout was light overall with only 7.14 percent of the registered voters casting ballots in the runoff, most of those were cast by Precinct 1 voters. In the race for Precinct Chairman, Dale Mueck defeated Mary McClaren Perrone 167 to 115. And Milam County voters favored Gene Kelly over Charles Gandy for U.S. Seantor by the count of 431 to 346. The Republican Primary runoff drew 102 voters as Milam County Republicans favored Ramsey Farley over Rodney Geer for U.S. Representative. Farley received 58 votes to Geer's 44. Farley went on to defeat Geer district wide for the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Chet Edwards in November. (Marlin) A huge turnout in Falls county Tuesday as more than 4,000 went to the polls. Four runoff elections unseated 3 incumbents including a Sheriff and Two commissioners. In the hotly contested Sheriff's race, Ben Kirk defeated incumbent John Trousdale by only 20 votes 2210 to 2190. Kirk trailed and the outcome was uncertain until the final box, Rosebud, came in with 254 votes for Kirk and 207 for Trousdale. Kirk ran for Sheriff in 1996 as a write-in candidate after Trousdale beat longtime Sheriff Larry Pamplin by 2 votes in the Democratic Primary. Trousdale won the general election over Kirk by 275 votes. Kird was Chief Deputy for Pamplin, and is currently Police Chief in Marlin. He will be unopposed in the General Election. In the race for District Attorney, Jody Gilliam easily defeated Bill Torrey 2767 to 1547. Incumbent Tom Sehon did not seek re-election. Two commissioners were unseated by newcomers in Tuesday's Election. In the race for Precinct 3 Commissioner, Nelson Coker defeated incumbent Tony Hoelscher 548 to 418. And in Precinct 1, Tom Zander beat incumbent Milton Albright 802 to 605. None of the Falls County Democrats will face Republican opponents in November. |
