Downtown West City Limits Alternative Buckholts Route

TxDot Holds Public Meeting

(Cameron)  Around 200 people attended a public meeting last (Tue) night pertaining to the Highway 36 widening project west of Cameron.  The Texas Department of Transportation hosted the meeting in the Cameron Jr. High cafeteria.  Revised right-of-way lines were displayed, indicating the divided highway starting at the west city limits, narrowing to a 5 lane highway through Buckholts, and then divided again from west of Buckholts to the roadside park east of the underpass.  Chad Bohne, Project Developer for TxDot said the project is about half way through phase one which is the development process.  Phase 2 is the right-of-way purchase, and phase 3 is the construction process.  Bohne said that even with the rash of accidents on the stretch of highway recently, the timeline to complete the project will probably not be affected.

The proposed new right-of-way lines have been tightened in town with minimal expansion affecting only a handful of businesses.

A proposed loop around Buckholts was displayed as an alternative route.   Bohne said consideration of the loop will be based on the amount of public comments and government input, however existing right-of-way lines are the department's first preference.

TxDot is encouraging further public comment by contacting the Bryan district office.  Comments may also be e-mailed to the department at cbohne@dot.state.tx.us .  Include the project number with all correspondence  CSJ 018502025.
