Two Area Residents Killed in Washington Accident |
(Maple
Valley) Two area residents were killed Sunday night in in
Washington after two 18 wheelers collided on a stretch of roadway often
called Washington's most dangerous highway. Killed in the accident
was Jessica Brogger, 21 of Cameron, and her boyfriend, William Lloyd
Mauldin, 26 of Rogers. Also killed in the wreck was the driver of the other
tractor trailer rig. The accident happened on Highway 18 at Maple
Valley near Seattle. The big rigs ran head-on into each other as
they passed beneath an overpass under construction at the Maple Valley
Highway interchange. Both trucks caught fire trapping the victims
inside.
State Transportation Department spokeswoman Claudia Cornish said the collision and fire damaged temporary supports of an overpass under construction, and the Highway was shut down for some 24 hours following the wreck. Brogger, who often rode with Mauldin were in a truck owned by the Willis Shaw trucking company of Arkansas. The other truck, which investigators now think was attempting to pass a slow-moving vehicle when it slammed into the Mauldin truck, was owned by the Gorten Trucking Company in Auburn. Funeral services for Brogger and Mauldin are pending with Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron.
