Texas DPS responded to a report of a vehicle that was actively failing to yield right of way / fleeing police entering Coryell County. The pursuit originated in Woodway. According to the lead crash investigator a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu passenger car, operated by 31-year-old Michael Scott Hughes of Gatesville, Texas, was fleeing police and reportedly waving a firearm out the window. 

The driver entered Coryell County on FM 929. The Chevrolet was travelling westbound on FM 929 at a high rate of speed. The Chevrolet lost control and crossed into the eastbound lane. A 2023 Volkswagen SUV was travelling eastbound. The Chevrolet collided with the Volkswagen. Hughes was killed upon impact. A 61-year-old male passenger in the Volkswagen was ejected from the car during the crash and pronounced deceased on scene. A 68-year-old female passenger in the Volkswagen was transported to ER and died at the hospital. 

The driver and two other passengers in the Volkswagen were all transported to Scott and White ER for injuries. Hughes was the only occupant in the Chevrolet. The crash investigation is still currently open. Next of kin have been notified. A copy of this crash report will be available at Texas.gov upon completion.
